Shrewsbury Quest

Located on a difficult site in the centre of Shrewsbury with two major roads either side and in the shadow of Shrewsbury’s Abbey, the medieval and Queen Anne buildings on the site (Scheduled Monument status and Grade II* respectively) were in poor condition and in need of significant structural and design intervention to ensure a long-term future for the buildings as an archaeological heritage centre.

Through careful landscaping as well as the construction of new oak cloisters enclosing the relatively small site, Arrol and Snell was able to create a coherent space for visitors despite the potentially conflicting mixtures of building styles and materials that were present in the existing building. The work involved extensive repair to medieval fabric and as well as the construction of new oak cloisters and a monastic garden, with ticket office, shop, restaurant and interpretive displays.
