York Minster – Undercroft

As Surveyor of the Fabric for York Minster, Andrew Arrol is overseeing a range of projects both for the Minster itself and for other properties in the precinct, such as the fifteenth-century St William’s College, which now acts as a conference centre and restaurant.

Andrew is also architect for the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘York Minster Revealed’ project – a £23 million scheme that involves the conservation and repair of the Minster’s east front, the reordering of the South Transept approach to improve visitor access and an overhaul of the Minster’s museum facilities in the Undercroft where Andrew is working in collaboration with interpretive designers to improve display and access facilities whilst not disturbing the medieval, Romanesque and Roman fabric both present in the Undercroft and supported by foundations within it.

The project combines high quality repair and conservation with a complex access project on a live site with constant pedestrian and visitor traffic.
